Today, Louise and I took our desktop PC to PC World to upgrade the RAM by 512 MB. Now it's constantly crashing . . . like, every 10 minutes! >:(  So we'll have to take it back again and sue their asses for $3,000,000,000, which should be just enough to make our camels either happy or launch. :P

Fact: It's better just installing things like RAM yourself, especially when the only alternative is PC World :P

I've taken back the new RAM chip after finding out that the motherboard can only take up to 384 MB of RAM. So I replaced it with a 128 MB chip, which, when added to the original 256 MB, brings it up to its capacity. Now it will run practicaly anything.

I think I have 500 some MBs of RAM, but I'm not completely sure.

So did you end up fixing it yourself, or did they do it?

Did I say? Mine is currently at 384 MB (64 of which is dedicated to graphics), which is apparently the most it can hold without crashing.

Somehow, my broadband internet connection speed has doubled. It use to be 150k, and now it's about 300k! O_O It's not due to the RAM upgrade either, as it's also faster on the laptop which shares the same connection. :???:

Today I went up into my attic out of lack of anything better to do (well, to tidy up, but I didn't have anything else to do anyway) and decided to have a rummage about. I discovered that I have quite a lot of stuff, ranging from the useful to the complete and utter pointless. I found *deep breath* six or so network cards, two sound cards, a 3DFX graphcs card, three hard drives, a 52x CD drive, a 100Mb ZIP drive, a Pentium II processor, an Epson dot-matrix printer, an Apple Mac without a monitor, an Apricot computer, countless keyboards and mice, three old PCs (one running OS/2), a BBC Master Micro with a secondary processor, mouse and graphics tablet, a Sinclair Spectrum ZX81, an ancient joystick, a stick of RAM (probably 32Mb), way too many different kinds of cables, and a network hub with the names Morag and Carol on it (WTF?)

All of those were more or less overshadowed by the discovery of my old Megadrive, though, which I lovingly photographed. Then shoved back in its box again.

 When I was 13 I woke up one night and found jam smeared on my inside leg. I can only conclude that either I had a dream that I played out in real life, but couldn't remember when I woke, like I sleepwalked, or I was molested in my sleep by a beautiful young princess who climbed in through my bedroom window. INITIATING NORMALNESS.


Yeah, so back to normal.  In tzar, I was playing a really fun map, which was great for campaign style play (playing on a random map, but like in campaign style.  It's really fun).  The balance of power was luckily enough for me not screwed over.  Anyhow, I won the game after about 10 hours total.  I've got the game documented in seven save files.  Why?  Well, it was one of the hardest and one of the best games I've ever played before, that's why.  I had to use a lot of skill to rise up from a tiny group of villagers sailing away in a ship across the vast sea to a tiny refuge, sailing away from their old village which was filled with invaders and being turned to rubble.  Not long after I abandoned my colonization campaign in a neighbor's land mass, the enemy took the offensive to my peninsula.  I had nowhere near the strength to repel them.  My southern front was occupied by he orange, who were coming from the main part of the continent.  I could only run to a tiny island, in a little ship, clear across the map.  It had one mine (this is not much) and some wood.  From here, I managed to raise a town, and eventaully was able to patrol my shores.  As soon as I saw the need for new resources, I decided to land on the mainland little ways south of me.  Huge wars were being waged there.  I had been involved in none of them for a long time.  This was the beginning of the turn around.  I defeated purple and converted several of their buildings.  I defeated them I know not how, but i suspect it was because they were facing another enemy at the same time, yellow.  Yellow was the most powerful nation on the map.  I ran into them immediately after occupying the purple.  I rushed to gather the much needed supplies.  I managed to hold the northern conitinent.  I researched their techs (they were a different civ(purple)) and trained an elite group of longbowmen.  I used them and several, several offensives (I must have used over 2000 soldiers alone to defeat yellow) to finally push south and defeat my adversary.  I had become a major world power with this victory.  I converted their buildigns too.  Green had been killed by orange and yellow.  So, that left orange, which was on the other side of the continent, near my original base.  A sea mostly separated the left side of the continent from the right side, but there was a small pass to the south.  I fortified this after driving back, very slowly, with a group of dragons, a huge, massive line of orange troops that would come constantly.  I finally made preparations to attack orange.  It was a success.  By now, my army no longer consisted of mostly men.  The vast majority was made of stone golems and dragons.  I ripped the city to pieces.  Then, there was one player left.  Red.  How ironic, that the player who destroyed me in the beginning, would be destroyed by me in the end.  I sailed in, and, I'll admit, it was hard to gain ground.  But, it had been hard to the whole game.  Eventually, I took the area I originally wanted to colonize, and then I took the other half of the island.

There's going to be a girls v teachers rounders match at school soon. Everyone in year six who isn't taking part has been asked to go as either a cheerleader or something silly.

And today's lesson is: Never ask someone who's an eccentric about a particular game to go in costume to anything. You don't know what you might be getting yourself into.

Rounders?  What is that?

Pretty simple. the person from the team who's batting hits the ball with their bat, runs round a circle of poles tapping each one until the ball gets to the pole in front of them, the person throwing gets the ball or the person running gets to the beginning again. If the running person manages to do this, their team scores a rounder. if they only get halfway they get a half rounder. After all the people in the people in the batting team have had a go, the teams switch. The team with the most rounders by the end of the game, as always, wins.

It's not that complicated. Honest.

I too turned vegemetarian about a week ago (although by now you've surely been vegetarian for nearly a month). I only ever ate meat when it was cooked for me; I never cook it for myself. Good on you Astral for starting so young, makes it that much easier (not that you should find it hard, I’ve found it a piece of dairy-free cake).

I have a wonderful rounders-tinged memory of my year six days (the best school years of my life). We were playing it in the school field as part of PE, when I thwacked the ball right over the perimeter fence. Instead of getting a new ball, our drama-obsessed teacher had us play ‘virtual rounders’, which was the same as rounders but without a ball, bat, or any sense of fun.

My Year 6 days was one of the worst school years of my life. I preferred Year 4.

I've been learning how to use corel draw (9) recently.  You can make some neat stuff with it.

Oh and also my mom and my step dad made the basement a complete reck, making it harder for my brother and I to get to our computers, and my brother has a bad video card and mom won't buy a new one.  Any PC we hook up to the internet becomes a pile of useless sludge.  I wonder why idiots had to screw the internet up so bad.  Oh well.

Can anyone point me to a good lemmings rom?  I want to play multiplayer at my mom's without dragging the SNES around.  Thanks.

Now might be a good time to say this. When you are playing a level, the objects do not show properly. They half-dissappear when you move the cursor. It's very hard to describe. The best thing to do would be to show you a screenshot. It could just be my emulator, because I haven't updated it for years.   ;)

If you use Zsnes it's your emulator. That happens to me too.

Oh, and for anyone that thinks I'd caught some wierd disease and got stuck in hospital or that I'd died and come back to life again, there is nothing wrong. I have simply been at my grandparent's house in Suffolk. There is no cause for alarm.

Yeah, I use Zsnes. Brilliant for lemmings 2 (Mouse support, Wahey! :thumbsup:), but awful for Original lemmings. Yup, I thought it was my emulator.

That's better than the SNES9X emulator atleast!  On mine you can't see the objects except for in a certain tiny area on the left side of the screen.

Really?  Strange, I'm pretty sure the graphics on mine is either perfect or close to it.  Maybe your version of SNES9x isn't current?

I do experience the problem ISU mentioned for ZSNES, but like him, I haven't updated my ZSNES for ages.

I ate at the Maennerchor in Columbus today on my German class field trip.  It was terrible!  The mashed potatoes were just plain horrible, and the applesauce didn't taste good either, and...ugh it was just bad  Xp.  We had about 16 German exchange students with us.  They were all talking amongst themselves and no one else understood them, even though we were in German class O_o.

LOL, maybe you should've taken French instead. ;P

I wish you'd have given me that advice five years ago, when we were given our language choices at school. Even though I was good at French, I chose German because "they're a more powerful country". What an idiot I was! I got a 'G' in my GCSE, and I deserved every letter of that grade for basing such a decision on a daft notion.

Well, German is a difficult language. Even some Germans have problems with it.

I had the choice between French and Latin. I chose Latin, no need to speak or unterstand (hear) anything. ;)

I hate the flu. My temperature was up around 104 (40C) yesterday.

I had the flu two years ago, and it was no fun at all.[smiley=sick.gif]  I had to turn in a huge physics project at school, even though I was too sick to attend class.  I was so weak that I could barely carry it into the car.

The next day, my parents had a big Christmas party planned at my house, and I was looking forward to it.  Instead of hanging out at the party, I was quarantined in my bedroom.[smiley=cry.gif]  I was well enough to go back to school the next week for final exams, but I wasn't completely better for another week and a half.

Right now, I am stressing over the last of my final exams.  I have a huge math final coming up, and I've been studying almost all evening.  My professor went through the course way too fast and finished a month early, so we've spent the last month studying stuff that is beyond the level of the course.  I will probably never need to know it again after the exam.  At least it's my last one -- tomorrow at this time I will officially be on Christmas Vacation, or Winter Break, or whatever you want to call it.  [smiley=winktounge.gif]

Something really really bad is that, just imagine: It's Friday, you have to go to school and you get the flu! You think: "Aah! Nice! No school today because I am sick!" but then, you opened the store of the window and... snowstorm! You heared from the radio: "No school for everyone!" "OH NOOOO!!!" [smiley=scared.gif]

Anyway, I talk about snowstorm, because there's one today here in Montreal. There are no classes today for us, but I've decided to come anyway! Yeah: I'm at school! :D

In fact, this is because I want to work on my homeworks (and we have HUGE homeworks to do!). I studying in the video game industry, so you can understand? ;)

I've got a sore throat at the moment. I've been off four days of school because of it, which has been great. Swallowing is a very painful procedure because of it though :(

We almost got a snow day in Atlanta.  It rained all Wednesday night, and the temperature hovered right around freezing.  Some of the water froze on tree limbs and stuff like that, but no ice accumulated on the streets, so we had to go to school.

A short distance northeast of Atlanta, some schools did close because the ice had accumulated on the roads and on power lines, knocking out electricity.

I'm kind of glad we didn't get a major ice storm.  I spent Wednesday night studying for an exam, and I didn't want it to get postponed, or I would have had to study for it again.

Our years are devoid of snowdays (which should be called wednesdays so that the snowday isn't jinxed) because the guy who decides if we have a wednesday is from a snowy region. It seems like he looks at a snowstorm and says "nope, no snowday, this is nothing compared to antarctica, school in antarctica wouldn't be canceled for this.". I know thats not true but that is part of why we haven't had a wednesday for a few years. Someone i kow said that German is easy to learn for those who are good at grammar and spelling, two strengths of mine. [smiley=cool.gif] German is by no means easy, but it's understandable and interesting so thats good.

French have been taking the ends off of the original italian words for years. Italian have a vowel at the end of every noun, the french don't anymore... I feel lazy... :-[

I have a friend that can harness energy to do magic of sorts.  So far he's pushed me onto the floor while I was standing perfectly fine using air, caught an overhead projector on fire during school, and attempted to levitate a chair (this didn't work)

I don't know.  He says it's something called "chi" that lets him channel energy around.  I can't get it to work though.

I doubt he made an overhead projector set on fire just by harnessing chi energy, but I can believe the pushing you over stuff.

I've been doing Wing Chun kung fu for two years and I've experienced sifus using chi energy. The entire club attempted to push this sifu over as he stood perfectly still, and it proved impossible.

He actually made it happen by accident.  He was trying to form a small spark in front of him and it got out of control :P

That was just a small spark? Holy fish! I dread to think what might happen if he attempted something bigger.  

Hopefully it won't be for a while, since he runs out of energy pretty fast.

I can make sparks appear on my nose. Sometimes it can hurt a bit though...

Actually it doesn't really matter where, it's just static electricity. :) I think I conduct electricity pretty well, which is probably why I sometimes hurt myself accidentally with a zap....

I don't really have aggressive mind-powers like that(I don't need them that much [smiley=winktounge.gif]), but I am, to a certain extent, psychic, and can sometimes predict the future with just my mind.

Chi tricks? I'm skeptical of their authenticity but you always have to wonder about these things because so many people belive it and have stories to go with... Seems poossible in some ways though, some of it. If you sent tons of messages to your nose, then your nerves would send electrical charges in your nose maybe causing sparks. It might be possible to make a spark on your nose but i really doubt that you could push someone over with electricity even with some wires and machines and stuff. A friend of mine can make an unplugged speaker make some noise by tapping the end of the plug as he told me. If you can make a blip of noise by touching a speaker plug i see how sparks on someones nose could be possible but i still dont believe that you could push someone over. :-/.

Now for my piece of pointless information:
John Adams, an American historical figure, went on an envoy to France to try to form an alliance and try to gain military support. When he arrived in France he discovered that an alliance had already been accomplished by Benjamin Franklin. The military help part was still very little. The reason was that the Comte De Vergennes and the french Monarch had their attention on a possible war on Britain while Britains army was over in America trying to quell the rebellion.

I don't know of any chi tricks, but I have heard of it before.  Besides Lemmings (of course), another one of my favorite games is Scrabble.  I've used the word "chi" before to rid myself of an unwanted "c" at the end of the game.

For some reason, I seem to be allergic to something in my own house, and it's driving me nuts. [smiley=sick.gif]  I've started taking an antihistamine, and my family is leaving tomorrow for a weekend vacation, so hopefully I'll be better before too long.

I would guess that you have mold in the air ducts. Has it rained a lot in the past month/week/whatever?

I just got home from my mini-vacation, and I figured out what my problem was.  It wasn't allergies at all -- it was a cold that's been progressing through my family over the last few weeks.  I'm about 80% better now, though.

Another piece of useless information:  I have to go back to school on Monday.  School is starting again!

I was too drunk to go to college on Thursday so instead I went to Asda,Sainsburys,then Subway,then Willy Bobs park then a few shops in town and then wandered around till 1pm then set off back home.

Now I'm trying to fix a problem with some Wolf-3d TC which should be hopefully available to download at the start of next month.

When in the computer room at college I always open up a word document then start going on the internet and when the computer assistant is coming I go on the word document to avoid getting into trouble for messing around on internet.

I have a small bit of pointless information to add.

I have posted almost nearly 1000 posts on this forum. Also I love to listen to the band Taproot and go and get some lovely ham sandwiches from Subway.

I just watched the anime film Grave of the Fireflies. Undeniably beautiful, but so depressing... I can't remember the last time I've been so touched by a film, and I certainly can't remember not being able to smile after seeing one :(

I do the same but I never end up getting caught. I usually prefer to work on the computers when in college. I end up going on such cool sites like http://www.stickdeath.com and http://www.stickpage.com as I love stickmen games.

I went on them websites they're both great. Stickmen games sure are great I agree there JM. The classroom game is pretty cool.

More pointless information:  I just had three tests in school on Friday!  Fortunately, I already understood the material, and there were no seemingly random facts that I had to memorize, so I didn't have to study too much.  It was just an unfortunate coincidence that they all happened to be on the same day.

It warms my heart to see people grieving their grandparents because I was never close to mine. When they died, I wasn't affected at all. I feel I've missed out on something, especially when I see the relationship that my nephews and nieces have with my parents.

Does anyone care to help me out on something?  I'm trying to build a neural network in Qbasic.  I made a little experimental one like this:

The W's are the weights, and the N's are the nodes (or perceptrons, or artificial neurons, or whatever it is that you might call them), and the O's are outputs and the I's are inputs.  I wanted to figure out how to use backpropagation to train the network (in this case train it to produce outputs that were simply the inputs doubled) so I could apply it to a much larger net.  My stepdad and I ran through an explanation of it, but I can't code it into my program, because the explanations I found confuse me, mostly because it involves calc, and I'm in algebra 2 (wonderful), but also because it's not very clear how all the equations play into each other.  If anyone could explain how to code for backpropagation, that would be great.  Heck, if anyone could explain the algorithm itself (keep in mind my level of math) that alone would be great.

Actually, this is for school.  X( .  A bit ambitious?  Yep.  Oh well.  I think I can stil do it...it'll take time of course.  Fortunately the due date for this is still a ways off.  The bigger one that I already have set up (minus the training method) is meant to distinguish between three and four sided polygons (I already drew up 1000 of these using another program I made, so I'm good there).  The smaller one I'm using to experiment with, mostly to figure out how to train the system.  Right now it's meant to simply double the input values.  I'll check out the code and see what I can do with it.

The input is just the value of all the pixels, 0 or 1.

Hm.  Yeah, I bet the library would be a good place to go.  I should probably ask my programming teacher about this too.

A tornado just hit about two miles north of my house on Saturday, damaging some homes and completely destroying a car wash (for those outside the US, 2 miles = 3.2 km).

The power went out at my house, and I consider myself fortunate that that was all that happened.  It could have been much worse.

After a bout of weirdness on an IRC channel last night, insanity ensued(as usual). Due to  a spike in activity, there was the largest group of people on the channel since early last year, apparently. We all baked a huge IRCookie to commemorate it. Unfortunately, not everyone helped out very well. A guy called WAFFALU kept yelling random things and blowing stuff up and Khatoblepas(you may know him) was, unfortunately, hooked on chewing the furniture. It was all I and my angelcat could do to get him to chew the IRCookie instead. Fun.
